Understanding Heavy Tails of Flood Peak Distributions

چکیده
Statistical distributions of flood peak discharge often show heavy tail behavior, that is, extreme floods are more likely to occur than would be predicted by commonly used have exponential asymptotic behavior. This behavior may surprise managers and citizens, as human intuition tends expect light the heaviness tails is very difficult predict, which lead unnecessarily high damage. Despite its importance, literature on rather fragmented. In this review, we provide a coherent overview processes causing implications for science practice. Specifically, propose nine hypotheses mechanisms in related atmosphere, catchment, river system. We then discuss extent current knowledge supports or contradicts these hypotheses. also statistical conditions emergence based derived distribution theory relate them generation mechanisms. review degree can from process data. Finally, recommend further research toward testing improving prediction tails.

On the asymptotic behavior of flood peak distributions
This paper presents some analytical results and numerical illustrations on the asymptotic properties of flood peak distributions obtained through derived flood frequency approaches. It confirms and extends the results of previous works: i.e. the shape of the flood peak distributions are asymptotically controlled by the rainfall statistical properties, given limited and reasonable assumptions co...
متن کاملOn the similarity of symbol frequency distributions with heavy tails
Quantifying the similarity between symbolic sequences is a traditional problem in information theory which requires comparing the frequencies of symbols in different sequences. In numerous modern applications, ranging from DNA over music to texts, the distribution of symbol frequencies is characterized by heavy-tailed distributions (e.g., Zipf’s law). The large number of low-frequency symbols i...
متن کاملFlood peak distributions for the eastern United States
[1] Annual maximum peak discharge time series from 572 stations with a record of at least 75 years in the eastern United States are used to examine flood peak distributions from a regional perspective. The central issues of this study are (1) “mixtures” of flood peak distributions, (2) upper tail properties of flood peaks, (3) scaling properties of flood peaks, (4) spatial heterogeneities of fl...

متن کاملExploring Heavy Tails Pareto and Generalized Pareto Distributions
This vignette is designed to give a short overview about Pareto Distributions and Generalized Pareto Distributions (GPD). We will work with the SPC.we data of our quantmod vignette. Therefore we have to reproduce the SPC.we data in exactly the same way as described the quantmod vignette. In financial data analysis stock indices as the S&P 500 index are typically analyzed by using the returns of...
